The Maxillofacial department is often described as the step between dentistry and medicine. This CPD talks about the Maxillofacial department in a hospital setting which specialises in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of diseases affecting the neck, jaw, mouth, and face. It also details the various expertise and professionals that make up the maxillofacial team.

The aim of this module is to enable the learner to:

Identify the different members of the maxillofacial team
Explain the different methods of investigation 
Explain the different types of oral cancer
Explain how to categorise or group the type of cancer and its size
Explain the treatment options
Identify the survival rates in the UK
Explain the methods to reduce the likelihood of developing oral cancer

• Effective communication with patients, the dental team and others across dentistry, including when obtaining consent, dealing with complaints, and raising concerns when patients are at risk.
• Effective management of self and effective management of others or effective work with others in the dental team, in the interests of patients providing constructive leadership where appropriate.
• Maintenance and development of your knowledge and skills within your field(s) of practice.
• Maintenance of skills, behaviours and attitudes which maintain patient confidence in your and the dental professions and put patients’ interests first.
