The aims of this module are to understand the importance of cross-infection control, the risks of infection, pathogenic and non-pathogenic microorganisms and the relevance of vaccinations.

• Define the terms pathogenic and non-pathogenic
• Identify the four main groups of microorganisms relevant to dentistry
• List the main diseases you or any patients may be exposed to in the dental practice
• Define what is meant by ‘blood-borne virus’ and which are the main concern
• Differentiate ways to become immune to a disease
