The Level 3 Dental Nurse Apprenticeship has undergone significant updates, designed to enhance and streamline the final assessment process, benefitting both apprentices and employers.
What’s changed?
The updated apprenticeship program now runs for 18 months with an End-Point Assessment (EPA) included in that timeframe. This means that, in most cases, the EPA will now be achievable within one month compared to three months previously.
End Point Assessment (EPA) process:
- Previously: Included one large multiple-choice exam, an interview, and an observation conducted at the dental practice.
- New: Apprentices now complete two smaller multiple-choice exams throughout the learning period, rather than during the EPA. Now, the body of work the apprentice completes throughout their apprenticeship is quality assured internally by Tempdent, including a final summative observation of clinical competency, and then compliance checked by City & Guilds as part of the new EPA process. The interview component has also been removed.
These adjustments minimise disruption for both learners and practices while ensuring apprentices are well-prepared and confident in their knowledge, using the portfolio of work completed throughout the Level 3 Dental Nursing Apprenticeship.
Removing the large multiple choice exam during the EPA and introducing two smaller exams throughout the apprenticeship reduces pressure, allowing apprentices to focus on building essential skills incrementally throughout their apprenticeship.
Additionally, this refined process means the apprentice can complete their apprenticeship and be submitted for GDC registration quicker than before!
